Old, Archived Questions
Where are you old tests?
- Look around. Look in the old classes. - Tom Morley
Can we use our notes?
What sections will this test cover, specifically?
- Exactly what was covered in HW. 11.1, parts of 11.2, 11.5
How many quizzes do you think we'll have this semester? I know it says (at least 4), but I would like to get a more precise number.
If we have five quizzes, will one be dropped? And are any review problems for quiz two going to be posted?
- Review questions for Quiz two will be posted Friday - Tom Morley
Is there a way we can exempt the final exam?
Do you curve the final grades?
If it isn't too much trouble, could you make some notes on the corrected version of Simpson's rule available, since our book will be of little help in studying it?
There on the Numerical Integration page - Tom Morley
On the homework due the 15, in section 8.7 do we need to do each of the approximation methods or just trapazoid and simpson's rule.
Does your old offer for quiz questions still apply?
Yes - Tom Morley
Do we have to do each rule or just the Simpson's rule?
Old offer for quiz questions? What does that mean?
Is there a course schedule, so I can see what important dates are coming up ahead of time (quiz's near spring break) ?
I don't understand where the 2880 comes from.
For the homework due 2/15/05, section 8.7, do we have to do all four parts for each question, or can we just use simpson's rule for all of them?
what happens if n is not even for the simpsons rule
- Round up to the nearest even integer. - Tom Morley
- Use the posted error formula, NOT the one in the book.
How far will the lectures be covered on the quiz Thursday? I assume up until you began linear algebra on Monday (8am).
Is section 11.6 going to be on the exam on thursday? You have it listed under the list of review problems but we never had a homework assignment on it.
- 11.6 Yes. We've done it in class. If there are any problems, proing them up tomorrow (Wed.). Quiz does not cover Linear Algebra - Tom Morley
On our midterm progress grades that we received...what did you define as the cutoff for an "S"?
About 50% on quiz 1. - Tom Morley
Are we going to have any opportunities to earn extra credit this semester? Thanks.
Yes. - Tom Morley
Where can the rest of the answers be found??
When is the next test? Is the final open note?
Yes, it is open note. That has been answered already, probably 10 times. Look under comments on homework.
Next quiz: March 10th - Tom Morley
Can you give more details about the extra credit now or will you tell us later?
Later.. Tom Morley
Can you post the averages for both quiz one and quiz two please
Are we no longer going to use the calculus text that we used for the first two units of this semester? (aka - can I pack it away and forget about it for the rest of this semester?)
Do you know the date of the final exam?
Spring Exam Schedule
Are you just going to Curve our final grades in the end, or drop our lowest quiz grade? And will there be any extra credit available this semester? Thank you.
Is it possible to organize some sort of TA-led study session for the next exam? I think that would really help smooth out the rough spots.
TA study sesions are up to the TA. - Tom Morley
Is it possible that you may slow down. It feels like you are rushing through the material and I personally dont think anybody knows completely what is going on.
OK - Tom Morley
When solving a house transformation problem, are we supposed to just compute the image of the house under the transformation ABC? (i.e. multiplying ABC) or do we also have to drow the picture as it progresses? If yes, then do we have to draw it as precise as possible (like shown on the old tests) because we would only be able to sketch it because we won't be using mathematica. (meaning on the test, can we just draw it to show that it "rotates," or "shears", etc by showing the difference in each images?)
Carlen's book is terrible. Not only is it vague and misleading, but it also gives examples which have little relevance
so when is the 3rd quiz? that answer seemed to be missing.
my bad, please ignore the previous line
=========
I tried solving one of the old test problems (Quiz #4 March 14, 2004 Problem 3), but isn't the value of t supposed to be 2/13 so that the answer'll be (34/13, 43/13, 15/13)? Beause I took a look at your solution, but in the line "In[2] = Solve[4x+-2y+z==5,t]," You have both + and - between 4x and 2y. So I think that's some kind of mistake you made when you were inputting. And also, is there anyway you can put solutions of the old tests in some other form? Because looking at solutions done by the mathematica is really confusing and there is not much steps that we can follow through in order to understand the problem. This problem alone took me a while to figure out what you did because when we're doing it by hand, we need to do much more steps than what you'd need to do on computer. Overall, mathematica solutions don't help much.
=========
I was wondering if you would put up a website or something that explained how to check for onto and one to one. I seem to be very hazy on how to actually check to see if it is these or not. Thanks
I think that the TA's should hand back all homework the class before the test so we can study. Sometimes my TA doesn't have the homework from two or three classes ago graded until the day of the test. It's just that for both past quizzes, I got my homework the day of the quiz because I couldn't meet the TA out of class, and couldn't study from it. Either the TA's should grade faster, or homework should be taken up after the test.
==================================================================
Yeah, this linear algebra 'book' is crazy bad. Does anyone know of a good website that explains this stuff? The concepts seem pretty simple once you figure them out, it's just hard to understand what the 'book' is talking about.
I agree Tom Morley
Is it possible to get a solutions for all the odd problems somewhere? for example, 2.21 is left off the solutions page.
Are we going to be able to drop our lowest quiz grade?
!=!=!=!=
Dr. Morley,
I think it would be more beneficial for us during lecture if you point out where we're going with the material before actually showing the proofs or other lecture aids. This would be very advantageous in organizing our notes. - Thanks
This might've already been suggested, but it'd be very helpful if the review problems have answers to them...
Prof. Morley,
To be honest with you, I'm just lost to with the direction of which the quiz is heading. I'm trying to review problems, but there aren't any solutions to the old quiz (just Mathematica......). It would be really helpful if you went over examples that are similar to that of the actual quiz.
I agree that we should have some sort of general outline before we start doing specific examples. We would probably get through everything a lot faster if we all just knew the general case of what was happening.
I will do a general outline today. - Tom Morley
Should we bring our stuff from the last few quizes we took, specifically the series (like the hw problem) thanxs(gtg223x
Dr. Morley, you mentioned that you generate a raw score, then scale it for the curve. How much (on average) has the curve been in past semesters? Is there any reason to doubt that it would be about that much this semester? Thanks!
When you say our project is to be done with MatLab, do u care if we just use Mathematica instead? Or does it have to be in MatLab?
here's a website that explains what vectors are if you're having trouble:
http://mathforum.org/~klotz/Vectors/vectors.html
oh and also, this site really breaks it down
http://www.purplemath.com/modules/matrices.htm
Will Planes determined by matrixes be on the quiz
When proving if somehting is one to one, do we need to prove linearity using f(V+ W) = f(V) + f(W) and cf(V)= F(cV) or can we just do it intuitiviely?
Just us it. - Tom Morley
Just curious, what are the specs to your PC in your office? I'm pretty sure that the case is Lian-Li full tower, and you have Dual ViewSonic LCDs. I think your power supply is from Enermax. Are you a Computer Enthusiasts? If they're the parts you picked, you're quite a PC connosiuer.
Prof Morley, how do you give the equation for the plane in which two points are found? I am in the 8 am class and it was not covered for us today, but was covered, I am told,in the 9 am class.
Why do I feel like I am not learning anything?? That linear algebra book is SHT!!!!!!! We need to get a better book PLEASE, and I know a good number of students would agree!!!
The majority of the students dont understand mathematica 5.0 could you please post quiz solutions in non mathematica form?
if only test questions = homework questions...
Complaining will do nothing for us, I am sure it has been done before with no success. What makes you think they will listen this time.
I always listen - Tom Morley
Does anyone else find it somewhat ridiculous that the TA's cannot have our tests graded after having 5 days to grade them?
yeah, it kind of is ridiculous. Last semester it never took this long to get tests back from the TA's
The TAs have tests homeworks and projects the same(or usually more) than you do, and additionally have lives, which sometimes come with difficulties of their own, 5 days is not that long.
I cant understand my TA when he talks and he cant understand us.
is there anything you people forgot to complain about?...nope I think you've all pretty much touched on every point...
Post the quiz solutions for those of us who didn't get the quizzes back :|
Why is it that the answer to section 3 in Chapter 2, don't correspond to what the questions are asking?!?!
WOW...I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY ONE WHO NOTICED THIS!!!
How do you find the equation of a plane if you are given 3 points?
Is it me...or do the answers to section 3 not match up to the problem?!
Our TA never finished covering this stuff.
The answers do not like up. Yep.
Yea guys, it's section 4 in the solutions book for some reason.
And I was wondering where
nvm about the wondering where.
I was looking at the class avgs for the first two quizzes. I was surprised at how low they were 66 for the first and 53 for the second. First of all does Morley curve? If so, how will he do it? Will he drop our lowest grade and curve one or simply curve the lowest?
I will get a grade from 0-100 then curve. - Tom Morley
Will you just curve our lowest test grade, Professor Morley?
I generate the quiz ave, hw. final, etc., and come up with a number -- that gets scaled - Tom Morley
Dr. Morley, do you know when we will have our last two quizzes?
Is the homework this week on chapter one, section 3? Isn't that what 1.3.# would indicate? or is it chapter 2.3 work?
Prof. Morley, I heard that you were going to consider students with A's to exempt the final. Will this A be before or after the curve?
Before - Tom Morley
================================================
When is the next test?
Is there going to be any extra credit this semester?
What if we made a mistake on the data entry?
Yeah, a lot of people only entered 5 numbers into the computer project data entry instead of 6, so what do we do about that?
When are we going to get review questions for quiz 4
Could you post an average for Quiz 3?
If anybody else needs a group or partner for the comp project, please email me gtg844y@mail.gatech.edu. Don't know or have matlab here...
How do you use Matlab? Are we going to go over it in class because I don't even know what Matlab is.
Where can we get Matlab?
Buy it at the bookstore, use one of the computers in the library, or find a friend with a copy and burn it (the last one is my preference).
UGH! Calculus makes me sad :(
Professor Morley, regarding the option to exempt the finals, does the grade that is used to decide whether one can be exempted or not depent purely on the test score average or test score average plus the HW and the Computer Project grade?
NEXT TIME YOU ADD HW PLEASE ANNOUNCE IN CLASS BECAUSE PEOPLE DO THE HW WHEN IT IS POSTED AND NEVER LOOK AT IT AGAIN!!! THANKS
OK. Sorry about that. - Tom Morley
Professor Morley, will you be reviewing in class for this next quiz, like you did the day before the last one? I found that review lecture very helpful last time, one of the most helpful lectures we've had this semester.
NEW QUESTION
When you say our project is to be done with MatLab, do u care if we just use Mathematica instead? Or does it have to be in MatLab?
A lot of people only entered 5 numbers into the computer project data entry instead of 6, so what do we do about that?
OK so exactly what sections are going to be on this next test on Thursday April 14??
When's the date of quiz 4?
Be nice!
Answer these questions, for heaven's sake
What was the AVERAGE of the last quiz?
i heard that if we have an A average, then we don't have to take the final. Is this true? And if so, how do you calculate the grade to determine if we have to take the final since the final accounts for 25%?
QUESTION ABOUT PROJECT
First of all, do we have to use MatLab or can we use Mathematica? And secondly I am confused about the formula you gave us to estimate the weight. For example...hours-exercise. Whats that? 24 hours-exercise hours? Please help! And when I used your data, I got an answer around 45 or so pounds...which is WAY off!
OK this is the second time I am posting this question... and I need an answer ASAP...WHAT SECTIONS ARE GOING TO BE COVERED EXACTLY ON QUIZ 4?
The dimensions don't agree when we try to divide cm/male
- you have to back divide by the male or female matrix
... the code is: cm \ male
Check the matrix you're making. Some people didn't enter all the information, so there are a lot of 0's for weight. I'm just making up probable numbers to fill in the missing data.
I just deleted the few idiots that left out their missing information!
Another question to add to this HUGE list that doesnt seem to be answered! Prof. Morley....do u care if we use Excel to do this?
Hello. Excell would be fine. - Tom Morley
Sections for quiz 4? See suggested problems
Do you want us to turn in our project in class or in recitation? Can we turn it in to you early?
Hey everybody, I'll be running a review session for the quiz this Thursday on Tuesday at 8:00ish(I'm coming from the couch building). It'll be somewhere in Skiles, I've not been told where, I'll post it on the door to room 149(my normal recitation room). Anybody that wants to can come. -Nick Cotton
What was the average for quiz 3?
I STILL NEED A PARTNER FOR THE PROJECT (8:00 am lecture) - please e-mail gtg542v@mail.gatech.edu!!!!!!!!!
To whomever had that question on hours-exercise: I think it is just an abbreviation for "hours of exercise".
PROF. MORLEY have you gone over in lecture any of the material on Chapter 2, page 52: 4.1, 4.2, 4.3, 4.7???????
Turn in one copy per group of the project in recitation - Tom Morley
Sections covered? See Quiz Questions for Review- Quiz 4
WELL-BEHAVED GROUP MEMBER LOOKING FOR A HOME - gte239v@mail.gatech.edu
Is there going to be any extra credit this semester?
PROF. MORLEY have you gone over in lecture any of the material on Chapter 2, page 52: 4.1, 4.2, 4.3, 4.7
Can you a review lecture on Wed April 12 for Exam 4. The last review lecture was really helpful.
=> I second the idea for a review lecture :)
How do you determine rank of a matrix?
I am also looking for group - please e-mail me gtg869b@mail.gatech.edu
I'm looking for a group as of 10:30pm , Tuesday, April 12 gtg100r@mail.gatech.edu
for rank i believe you row reduce and count the colums that have pivots, but i could be wrong
can we do the computer projects by ourselves?
oh and here's a hopefully helpful linear algebra site: http://www.math.odu.edu/~bogacki/cgi-bin/lat.cgi
Conperter project by yourselves? Yes. - Tom Morley
For those of you trying to (elegantly) find that bad data in both datasets, this regular expression for Vim (the text editor) should find all the bad lines with missing information. To search, use the '/' key, then type:
^\(\d\ \)\{,4}\d$
Regex's for other programs should be fairly similar...
whoops, coweb didn't like all those escape characters...
Is there a review session going on now somewhere??
?
I really don't appreciate the way the tests are answered. Using Mathematica or matlab to show the answers for questions we are supposed to work by hand may be convenient but it does next to nothing in helping us learn to better work the problems by hand as we're expected to do on the test. I also still feel like we do a lot of off topic things in lecture that although interesting have little to no application to the homework and quiz problems. While I appreciate the amount of work we're supposed to put into this class on our own, it would be much easier to understand if the lecture were more focused towards the same ends as the book and would likely reduce the number of basic questions a lot of the students have like "how do you determine rank of a matrix". thanks
I agree with him ^
WellI think the quizes and the class work are pretty close. I use mm in class to make sure the answer is correct. I mostly work the problem on the board. As far as the book is concerned, the only part I read are the problems. - Tom Morley
FYI: The students in the 9am lecture had to take their quiz today while the fire alarm was going off. Not for just part of the time but the WHOLE time. There needs to be some grade compensation or the chance to retake the quiz.
I can't concentrate with noise in the background, I grew up in a quiet small country town and taking tests with so much distraction in the background is incredibly difficult. I couldn't think straight, I could concentrate, and I was highly frustrated during the test today. I found myself trying write to the beeping of the fire alarm. Is there anything that can be done about the fire alarm incident in class today? Some students find it more difficult to work during noise than other students.
I agree. I knew how to do the test - there was one part I misread because I couldn't concentrate. I don't think we should penalized for the fire alarm. There should be some compensation because the 8am class did not take their test in the sam environemtn so it is unfair.
will you be dropping our lowest quiz grade when calculating averages?
Will you be dropping our lowest quiz grade when calculating averages? And what was the average of the 3rd quiz it's still not posted?
When and how would we find out that we're exempt from the final?
Shut up and stop complaining
Learn to work with distractions!!!!
I'm open to suggestions about the fire alarm. - Tom Morley
See:
What to do about the fire alarm at 9:30
I agree with the "shut up and stop complaining" person. Thank you. You guys are wasting space on this wall...please stop nagging.
I took the test at 9 and had no problems
good for you
BEST SOLUTION:
We take into consideration variables such as age, weight, height, waist, and hours of time studying calc a week. We then take these variables and put them into a matrix. We set b equal to their test values on the past test. We then find the least squares solution of the matrix and use that data to apporximate the best fit of the scores of each student of the 9 am class.
Why do people have to be so arrogant?
Braves Rule!!! Yankees Suck!!!
Braves are....horrible...Go Yanks!
yeah Iguess when you have a 200 million dollar payroll you can buy whoever you want to play for you. Braves all the way
If the braves want to stop sucking then maybe they should find $200 million for payroll and then they can finally improve their mediocre post season performances. otherwise this will always be true: yankees>braves
speak the truth
What is the day and time of the final exam???
(and apparently we have the possibility to exempt... how do we know about that too?)
Braves rock, you nub
For the final see http://oscar.gatech.edu
What was the average for quiz 3 and will there be any extra credit this semester?
Extra credit would be great, can we please have an opportunity to get some?
The Braves are the best! Go Bravos!!!
Are you going to drop our lowest test grade?
Dunno
hey professor morley, will you be offering any extra credit opportunities for this class??
Rawr.
