3rd HW, Due Tuesday 24
- Find the curvature and torsion for the curve r(t) = cos(2t)i + sin(2t) j + 3 t^2 k. The torsion is extra credit.
Questions?
For Hw #3 do you mean dN/dt / (ds/dt) = -kappa T - tau B so that it would be dN/ds= -kappa T - tau B instead of what is on this website: dN/dt / (dt/ds) = -kappa T - tau B which means (dNds)/(dtdt)= -kappa T - tau B
Yes, I'm pretty sure that's what he meant: (dN/ds) = (dN/dt)/(ds/dt). Nguyen
can we use the formula:
k = (x'y''-x''y')/((x'^2 + y'^2)^(3/2))
on HW3, or does the 3t^2k make that answer inaccurate??
>You cant use that.-Rohit
This formula is derived for plane curves (no k component). You should use kappa = ||vxa|| / (||v||)^3. Nguyen.
is the torsion the same as the normal component of acceleration (k(ds/dt))?
No, they are not the same. For example, consider a circle on a plane. At any point on the circle, acceleration points toward the center in the direction of the principal normal vector, hence the normal component is not zero; while the torsion is always zero (because this is a plane curve, there is no "twisting"). Nguyen.
what is vxa?
>it's v cross-product a... the steps are shown in the book, on pg 803
I've written a solution to the third homework's problem for your perusal before tomorrow's test. You might have to fiddle with the viewing to get it to appear as more than a collection of dots...I just scanned in a written sheet. -Robert
Nice. - Tom Morley
Is there any hw due this week?
Yes see above - Tom Morley
is there a quiz this week?
Yes - Tom Morley
will there be a review session either tuesday or wednesday? if not will, prof. Morley review in class on WED?
Wed class will be review. If there are any questions, be sure and let me know. - Tom Morley
What was the average of quiz 2?
my section a5: 26.83/30 - nguyen
A2: 23.02/30 - RV
2-27-06 Do the question marks in Thursday, March ?? mean this Thursday, March 2?
Yes, please turn these in on March 2 (Unless Prof. Morley overrule my statement) - nguyen
Is problem 30 in 15.7 meant to be problem 20? The numbers are listed out of order.
I don't know. Just try to do both #20 and #30, that doesn't hurt =) -nguyen
so, no review problems for this test?
I'll put them up tomorrow (Tuesday) - Tom Morley
What was the average for quiz 3?
don't know, haven't seen the scores =) if you're in a5, i'll let you know on tuesday. -nguyen
do you mean section 16.10 for homework due march 30th?
good question
Yes
when is Quiz 4??
April 11.
what sections do we need to know for the quiz?
will there be review problems for quiz 4?
will there be quiz 5? I hope not.
Is the 4 section that were posted as quiz 4 review the only 4 section that will be on the quiz?
I dont think that's quiz4 review up there, to me it looks like another hw that is not collected
OMG.. is there going to be a curve?
Anybody else think quiz 4 was unnecessarily hard?
I felt that it didn't accurately test my knowledge on the subject (no matter how much I study I can not picture things in 3D.)
Just to let you guys know, when morley meant the last week of class he meant dead week so the project is due next Friday the 21st.
Missing File (http://coweb.math.gatech.edu:8080/uploads/calculus/testing)
Morely said there will not be a Quiz 5
Can we exempt the final if we have A grade?
Do we have any more homework or is it just problems we should know for the final?
No more HW
Woohoo
yes, TAs are glad too =) -nguyen
