Group 1: Assignment 771 and 5 Sara 4 and 6 Miles 1. A high luster, moderate costing evening dress must be shiny in appearance and cannot be expensive. Acetate would be the best selection for the dress since it has high luster and is not overly expensive. Although linen, mohair, silk, and ramie also have high luster, they all are expensive fibers. 2. For simulated fur fabrics: REQUIREMENTS: A simulated fur fabric should have the properties of real fur, that is, it should provide warmth without excess bulk or weight (low density/specific gravity) and have a soft hand. (a) polyester -- Polyester would be a possible choice for this application. It can be modified so that it has wool-like properties. Polyester has a moderate specific gravity (not low), so a fabric made of it may have good insulating properties, but be heavier than a garment made of a more appropriate fabric (see modacrylic). (b) rayon -- Rayon has a relatively low density, but has other disadvantages It is a weak fiber and does not have a fur-like feel, instead it feels like silk. (c) MODACRYLIC -- Modacrylic is the fiber of choice in this application. Modacrylic is used as fake fur because it is low in density and provides good insulation at a relatively low weight. Modacrylic can be texturized so that it feels very fur-like. (d) saran -- Saran is a high-density fiber, so it provides less insulation per weight unit than modacrylic. Saran is also stiff and does not drape so it is unsuitable for garments. (e) wool -- Wool is an actual fur fiber, so it is unsuited to be a simulated one. 3. For blending with cotton in a permanent press man's shirt. REQUIREMENTS: For a permanent press garment, the selected fiber should have excellent resilience so that it maintains its shape without ironing. The fiber should also have approximately the same care requirements as cotton (machine wash & dry), and should be comfortable to wear. It should also be easy to dye so that it can match the cotton in the shirt. Its strength should be close to that of cotton, so the garment remains high in strength. (a) olefin -- Olefins have good resilience but must be dyed before being formed into a fiber (which can limit its usefulness as a primary apparel fabric). (b) acrylic -- Acrylics have good resilience, but are relatively weak so adding them to a cotton shirt would reduce the strength of the garment. (c) POLYESTER -- Polyester is used in a cotton/poly blends for permanent press garments because it has a strength comparable to cotton and EXCELLENT resilience so it resists wrinkles. (d) modacrylic -- Modacrylic is similar to acrylic in that its strength is about the same (lower than cotton). In addition, modacrylic may shrink when dried in a dryer, making it unsuitable for a perm. press shirt. (e) triacetate -- Triacetate has good resiliency and wrinkle recovery (although it sometimes requires touch-up ironing), but has a very low strength, so it would weaken a cotton shirt. 4. For unlined curtains in a south-facing window The most important consideration for curtains in a southern exposure is the sunlight that they will be exposed to. a. Acrylic has very good resistance to sunlight and would be the best choice for an unlined curtain. It also has resistance to mildew and organisms. Age has no effect on strength. b. Acetate is a good choice for curtains, but it needs to be lined to protect it from the sun. c. Silk is rapidly deteriorated by sunlight and will quickly yellow. it is also expensive for curtains. d. Viscose Rayon is a good choice for curtains, but it needs to be lined to protect it from the sun. e. Nylon is also quite strong but breaks down in sunlight. 5. Carpet for an office building must be strong, durable and resistant. Polypropelene is the most ideal fiber for carpet due to the fact that it is strong and durable, has good abrasion resistance, good light-fastness if dyed, and is resistant to moths. Nylon also has good abrasion resistance and good strength but is mostly used for apparel. Wool is a weak fiber and becomes weaker when wet. Wool also is easily ruined by chemicals so is not a prime candidate for carpet. Acrylic would not work because it is a weak fiber and would not withstand the heavy traffic that carpet goes through. Finally cotton would not work, because unlike polypropelene and nylon, it is only moderately strong. 6. For reinforcing material in a composite for sports applications a. Carbon finer would be the best choice. It is extremely light weight and very strong. b. Wool is not a good choice to reinforce sports equipment. c. TiO2 (Titanium dioxide) is not a good choice. d. Vinal would not be a good choice. It is generally used in industrial applications and limited use in apparel. e. polyvinyl alcohol (Vinyon). It is generally used in non-woven fabrics like tea bags. Comments:Berwin Echols thinks that you did a wonderful job in thinking out your answers and giving the proper information so therfore your assignment was nice.Comments from Group 3: You did very thorough work for most of the assignment, but the answer given for #6 leaves something to be desired; otherwis Link to this Page
