Bobbin Show -Group 1

Josh and I (Brett) went together to the show, while Shoy went independently. Our trip began with a ride on the wonderful

transit system to the World Congress Center. Once inside, we obtained our badge holders (which were too small for the badges) and proceeded downstairs to the wrong show. We came back up the three flights of stairs and walked around to the other side of the building and were finally at the Bobbins Show. The first booths we passed were mainly embroidery and shipping companies who basically ignored us. The first interesting device we spotted was at the Assyst Bullmer company booth. It contained a huge platform which had many layers of fabric piled on top. Above the platform and attached to it was a device similar to a sewing machine rigged up on axial poles (like the insides of an Etch-a-Sketch) which swiped across the fabric with a needle, quickly cutting out the desired patterns. The machine was being fed these patterns via a computer so that the patterns could be plotted out minimizing wasted unused fabric. One of the members at the booth allowed us to view some samples and was very helpful in answering our questions. After that we walked around some more and saw more embroidery booths before coming upon a giant fabric printer which is very similar to the type that architects use to print out blueprints these days. After being ignored, we grabbed some brochures and found the Hydroweave booth. The guys working the booth there were extremely nice even though they knew we were students and even gave us some samples of their product. The Hydroweave fabric is designed for steel mill workers, race car drivers, etc. who work in intense heat. The fabric contains a polymer that once soaked in water, begins a rapid evaporation process that keeps the wearer cool for up to six hours. They had a contained demonstration running also which displayed an external temperature of 106 F and an internal temperature (underneath a layer of fabric) of only 88.5 F. After talking for awhile we left the show and returned to campus.

Overall I thought the show was interesting, I just wish that I wasn't so rushed (I had CHEM lab that day) and that I could have found out more about the show and where specific companies would be set up ahead of time. I also would have liked to see more machinery rather than embroidery and systems management companies.

Group one was very discriptive and explained their trip very well. We also liked the conclusions at the bottom that really summed up thier expirience and what they thought the Bobbin Show could improve on. Well done!
Group 9: Group 1 did a good job describing their trip and experience at the Bobin Show. Reading through other discussions, we've noticed that everyone is talking about the hydroweave. We like how this group put ways of improvement in their conclusion.
