Trade Balance

External Image

Difference over a given period between the market value of a country's exports and its imports of merchandise. The balance of trade is part of the current account balance in the balance of payments. Services are not included in the balance of trade, so the measure is more correctly identified as the balance of merchandise trade. Sometimes, however, you may see balance of trade erroneously used to include both goods and services. People also use it as a synonym for the entire balance-of-payments current account, including investment income and government payments, so it is wise to clarify how the term is being used.
